Description
Description | The Embarcadero Freeway was constructed along San Francisco's downtown waterfront in the 1950s, blocking views and casting shadows on the Ferry Building. Following its opening in 1959, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted against the construction of seven out of nine planned freeways across the city, rejecting $280 million in federal funding. This decision was part of a broader freeway revolt in the 1960s and '70s that stopped many freeway projects across the U.S., including Robert Moses's Lower Manhattan Expressway in New York City. |
