Embarcadero

The project consisted of upgrades including the construction of new sewer junction structures along the Embarcadero, rehabilitation of approximately 240 linear feet via slip lining a 28-inch HDPE pipe underneath the Embarcadero and Jackson Street combined sewer discharge structure. Construction of a new valve and control vault including a 28-inch knife gate valve with hydraulic actuator sitting 23 feet below the existing sidewalk. The team that completed this project came across a handful of unknowns and many challenges. Some of these challenges were working with an extremely high-water table, unknown utilities, historical architectural structures, and the existing sewer to be slip lined was found out of alignment and surrounded by wood piles, sheet piles, concrete structures, and buried materials. The majority of unknown buried materials came from the 1989 earthquake that collapsed the elevated freeway above the now well-known Embarcadero.
