EMBL Interdisciplinary Postdocs - Life in Context

EIPOD-Life in Context (EIPOD-LinC) is an interdisciplinary postdoctoral programme from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Building on the success of prior EIPOD projects, EIPOD-LinC tackles critical challenges to human and planetary health by promoting international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration. It provides outstanding training to 57 international researchers recruited through a transparent, merit-based process, equipping them with the skills to bridge research, innovation and policy, fostering a new generation of researchers committed to addressing global challenges. Fellows design societally relevant interdisciplinary research projects that explore molecular mechanisms in natural environments. Research spans four key areas: Molecular Mechanisms, Human Health, Planetary Ecosystems, AI and Theory aligning with EMBL’s research programme Molecules to Ecosystems. Projects address urgent threats to human and planetary health, supporting EU Missions and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Collaboration is central to EIPOD-LinC, with fellows working alongside EMBL group leaders and partners from the academic and non-academic sectors across EMBL’s 29 Member States. The programme’s bottom-up approach encourages dynamic collaborations, strengthening European research networks and promoting mobility within the European Research Area. Fellows receive cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and transferable skills training, coupled to professional career development support. EIPOD-LinC empowers them to make informed career decisions and develop skills that make them attractive to future employers in their chosen fields. Specialised training fosters innovative mindsets, instilling a strong sense of responsibility for science and society. Outcomes include enhanced career perspective for fellows and increased visibility and attractiveness of EMBL and institutes in its member states, contributing to Europe’s competitiveness and growth.
