Description
Description | The project will support activities aimed at enhancing the food security of Jordan in the short and medium terms. In the short term(Component 1), the project will respond to urgent domestic needs to ensure uninterrupted supply and continued access to feed foranimals, and the preservation of productive assets for livestock owners, and food for poor and vulnerable households, through thepurchase of barley (equivalent to three months of consumption) and wheat (equivalent to two months of consumption). In the mediumterm (Component 2), the project will address medium term needs for improving food security, in alignment to the National FoodSecurity Strategy of Jordan. These include: i) ensuring the reduction of food loss for wheat and barley through the establishmentof two aggregation points in marginal and poor areas of the country, and improving planning; ii) analysis of food policy options inview of improving the fiscal sustainability of government interventions in food-related programs, and in complementarity toexistent social protection measures in the country; the linkages between food policies and nutritional outcomes in the country willalso be addressed; iii) increasing the resilience to supply shocks of existent basic commodity management systems (includingimport, storage, distribution), identifying innovative approaches to improving efficiencies, competitiveness, and trade. This willbe done for key basic commodities, in addition to wheat and barley, including sugar, milk powder, vegetable oils, and rice, wherethe private sector plays a critical role in the purchase, storage and distribution of the goods; iv) supporting the GOJ with theformulation of commodity risk management financial instruments in the context of strengthening regional collaboration on foodsecurity. Through the above activities, the project will also reduce climate change vulnerabilities and build a more resilient foodsystem. |
