Description | Empire Wind is a $5 billion offshore wind project located off the coast of Long Island, New York. It is being built by the Norwegian energy firm Equinor and consists of two phases, Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2, with a total of 147 turbines located between 15 and 30 miles offshore. The project aims to supply 2.1 megawatts of energy, enough to power more than 1 million homes. Construction had begun but was temporarily halted by a federal stop-work order, which was lifted on May 19, 2025. The first phase, Empire Wind 1, has an 816-megawatt capacity and is projected to be completed in 2027. |
