Empowering Knowledge on the EU in Taiwan

This project aims to develop a comprehensive EU-focused learning module in Taiwan, enhancing students’ and faculty’s understanding of the European Union (EU) through an interdisciplinary approach. Integrating politics, economics, law, environmental studies, and security studies, the module addresses global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and regional security. Students will examine EU institutional structures, policies, and values—democracy, sustainability, and multilateralism—through theoretical and practical methods. The primary audience includes students and faculty within the National Taiwan University (NTU) System—NTU, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST)—collectively serving nearly 60,000 students. The module offers lectures comparing EU and East Asian perspectives. Guest speakers, including EU diplomats, business leaders, and civil society representatives, will bridge theory with real-world applications. The project aligns with existing initiatives like the National Graduate Students Forum on EU Studies, the EUTW Forum, and the Taiwan-European Culture Forum, fostering discussions beyond academia by involving policymakers and stakeholders in exploring EU perspectives. Encouraging academic mobility and collaboration, the project provides guidance on Erasmus+ scholarships and exchange opportunities, strengthening Taiwan-Europe academic partnerships and increasing participation in EU-related programs. Expected outcomes include deeper comprehension of EU policies and values, expanded academic and cultural activities, and increased engagement with Erasmus+. By enhancing EU studies at NTU, the project aims to establish the most comprehensive EU course module, raising NTU’s European studies to a level comparable with its U.S. and China-focused research, fostering a balanced global perspective in higher education.
