The Italian company Enel Green Power (EGP) announced the development of the Chucas hydroelectric Plant located in Chucas de Mora, between Alajuela and San Jose, Costa Rica (50 MW in capacity). The special purpose company P.H. Chucas S.A. was created to manage the project. In 2008, the project signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Grupo ICE). In December 2012, Italy’s public-private development financing institution Simest S.P.A invested US$ 13 million (EUR 10 million) in two of the company’s renewable power projects in Latin America: the Chucas hydroelectric Plant in Costa Rica (50MW) and another power plant in Mexico (74MW). The investment was estimated at US$ 273 million, and additional financing information was not available. The EPC contract was awarded to the Chinese company Sinohydro in December 2010. The construction works started in March 2011, but early in 2014 Sinohydro was replaced by the Spanish company FCC. Commercial operations were delayed due to geological problems.
