The Jordanian Water Supply Authority (WAJ) is the largest consumer of electricity in the country. Electricity consumption accounts for almost 40% of WAJ's operating costs and, due to the high proportion of fossil fuels used in Jordan's electricity production, leads to significant greenhouse gas emissions. Description
Description | The Jordanian Water Supply Authority (WAJ) is the largest consumer of electricity in the country. Electricity consumption accounts for almost 40% of WAJ's operating costs and, due to the high proportion of fossil fuels used in Jordan's electricity production, leads to significant greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies in the Water Sector IV project is a continuation and addition to the Energy Efficiency in the Water Sector (BMZ No. 2010 66 398) and Energy Efficiency in the Water Sector II (BMZ No. 2012 66 733) projects. The nationwide program is intended to finance selected energy efficiency measures (e.g. restructuring of water distribution networks, energy-efficient rehabilitation of pumping stations) as well as in the area of renewable energy production in connection with the electricity supply of the water and wastewater sector (e.g. photovoltaic systems, use of biogas from sewage sludge). The overall development policy objective is to contribute to the sustainable and efficient management of Jordan's scarce water resources in order to ensure a sustainable supply for the country. The aim of the FC module is to achieve cost savings for Jordanian water companies and to improve the energy balance as a contribution to climate protection. The project has no direct target group. However, the entire population of Jordan benefits indirectly, as the efficiency measures strengthen the nationwide water supply companies (WVU) and the WAJ and the operation of the water supply infrastructure needs to be subsidized to a lesser extent. |
