Description
Description | The King Abdullah Canal (KAC) carries water from the northern to the southern Jordan Valley, which is used for both drinking water and irrigation purposes. The KAC's advanced age and poor condition, as well as unauthorized withdrawals, contribute to significant water losses along the canal, while at the same time water in Jordan is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive new resources, especially through the energy-intensive desalination of sea and brackish water, must be developed in order to meet the country's water needs in the medium term. As part of the project, the northern section of the KAC is to be rehabilitated over its entire length of 65 km and additional equipment for operation and maintenance is to be procured. A parallel investment project by the European Investment Bank, however, focuses on the southern section of the KAC. The aim of the FC project is to reduce water losses and increase the amount of drinking water available for Irbid and Amman. The aim is to reduce the need for the costly and energy-intensive use of alternative resources and to contribute to adapting to climate change by protecting Jordan's scarce water resources. The target group is, on the one hand, the population in the greater Amman and Irbid regions, who benefit from a secure water supply. On the other hand, the public water supply companies and the Water Authority Jordan (WAJ) benefit, as they can provide drinking water supplies more cost-effectively overall thanks to the additional water from the KAC and require less desalinated water. The project sponsor is the Jordan Valley Authority (JVA), which is subordinate to the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI). |
