Description
Description | Deployable military camps are almost 100% dependent on fossil fuel, which represents a high environmental footprint and a vulnerability for the armed forces. Growing energy consumption of military equipment and energy transition/Green Deal are also new trends. INDY aims to develop a strategic roadmap towards the future energy independent and efficient deployable military camps, based on a paradigm shift for energy production, conversion, storage, transport, distribution and final usage. Building on (military and civilian) EU and national projects, INDY provides 1/ requirements for energy independent and efficient systems for deployable military camps, 2/ methods for defining a common approach for interoperability, security, risk, cyber protection and life cycle 3/ tools for planning, simulation, optimal control and camp energy digitalisation 4/ evaluation of the best available and disruptive technologies and systems for the entire energy chain and for all energy usage 5/ a modular architecture for energy systems, adaptable and demonstrated for four different use cases. INDY will be the first step to increase the security of energy supply and autonomy of deployable military camps and support their full transition towards renewable energy sources. The roadmap shall seek to reduce the usage of fossil fuel by 40% in 2030 (compared to 2020) and to reach 100% fossil fuel independency in 2050. INDY is a first step leading to an implementation roadmap, which could be used to set-up a full-scale operational demonstrator of a deployable camp fulfilling interoperability between inter-allied armies and NATO. INDY will be implemented over a period of 26 months by 28 entities from 13 EU countries and will seek to reinforce cross-border cooperation in the field of energy independent military camps beyond the project lifetime. As a result, INDY will contribute to enhance the competitiveness and innovation capacity of the EU defence industry in the area of new energies. |
