The Danube Region is heavily reliant on fossil energies, particularly on natural gas which is mainly imported from Russia. This makes the Region vulnerable regarding security of supply and also keeps energy price high due to the transfer costs. The EUSDR, therefore, set the objective of supporting energy efficiency investments and the use of renewable energies. As urban areas represent more than two thirds of the energy consumption, the role of local authorities in energy saving is significant. The EPIC START project had the specific objectives of setting up an international network to transfer the elaborated tools and concepts for enhanced renewable energy use to regional/local levels. EPIC project partners examined the current energy-planning methods in the four participating countries; Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. Conclusions of the different surveys were summarised in a handbook for local decision makers for further consideration.
