Description | EnergySolutions, a Utah-based company, has received approval from the Northwest Interstate Compact to import and store over 1.3 million cubic yards of radioactive waste from Ontario, Canada, at its disposal facility near Clive, Utah. This marks the first time foreign nuclear power waste will be permanently disposed of on U.S. soil. The project includes plans to expand disposal capacity at the Clive facility, with Ontario waste capped at 15% of the expanded capacity and 85% reserved for U.S. generators. The expansion is supported by Utah legislation mandating a fee of up to $30 million if an expansion application is filed before December 31, 2025, which EnergySolutions is accelerating regulatory approvals to meet. The project is part of a regional nuclear advancement initiative involving Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. |
