Description
Description | The project comprises the construction and operation of twelve thermal power plants (diesel) with total installed capacity of 240.9MW in the states of Piaui, Ceara, and Bahia. The company responsible for the project is Enguia Gen Ltda, a consortium of Brazilian companies led by Grupo Arbi. The total investment in the project was estimated at US$130 million. In Ceara, seven plants were commissioned in April 2002: Pecem (13.1MW), Iguatu (13.1MW), Caucaia (13.1MW), Crato (13.1MW), Juazeiro do Norte (13.1MW), Aracati (11.45MW), and Baturite (11.45MW). The total investments in Ceara were estimated at US$47 million. In Piaui, four plants were commissioned in July 2002: Campo Maior (13MW), Altos (13MW), Marambaia (13MW), and Nazaria (13.1MW). In Bahia, the Jaguari power plant (100.4MW) was comissioned in June 2002. In January 2002, Enguia Gen signed a PPA with the Brazilian Commerce Chamber for Emergency Energy (CBEE), which is a two-year take-or-pay contract for the twelve plants. Enguia Gen’s power plants were part of a priority program for thermal power plants (Programa Prioritario de Termeletricas), implemented by the Brazilian federal government in 2000. The program, in order to foster the construction of thermal power plants, provided a short-term take-or-pay contract and, in some cases, financing for the construction of the plants (through the Brazilian Development Bank, BNDES).
