Description

Description

"The KU Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (KU JMCE) at Korea University aims to be a leading hub for EU-related academic activities, outreach, and researcher networking. Since its establishment in 2019, KU JMCE has been a key player in European Studies, promoting academic exchange between the EU and South Korea, and contributing to the EU studies network in the Asia-Pacific region. Building on this success, the KU JMCE is expanding its focus to security collaboration between Europe and Korea. This project, titled ""Enhancing Security Partnership Between the EU and Korea"" addresses the growing security ties between Europe and Northeast Asia, driven by global challenges such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. South Korea’s increasing engagement with the EU and NATO, especially through the NATO+IP4 framework, highlights its expanded role in global security. Additionally, North Korea’s alliance with Russia and its advancing nuclear and missile capabilities raise concerns about regional security, underscoring the need for stronger EU-Korea cooperation. The project also addresses economic security, including the impact of supply chain shifts, trade conflicts in high-tech industries, and regulatory changes such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the CHIPS and Science Act. Non-traditional security challenges, such as climate change, global health crises (including pandemics), and human security, further highlight the importance of enhancing the EU-Korea security partnership. KU JMCE will organize academic and policy-focused events to foster a deeper understanding of EU security values, provide research opportunities on EU-Korea security cooperation, and promote dialogue with diverse communities on shared challenges. By leveraging its previous achievements, the Centre aims to strengthen institutional ties and contribute to a dynamic, interconnected EU-Korea security framework."
