Description
Description | There are increasing occurrences in Nunavut of water sources, storage facilities and treatment systems being compromised or threatened. This project will provide a range of proactive and emergency response capacity-building measures to prevent or mitigate against the drinking water insecurity in Nunavut communities. In one component of the project, a reverse osmosis system will be constructed to meet the emergency needs of a greater number of communities. Due to its size, this previously purchased system could not be transported to 13 communities resulting in one third of all Nunavumiut not having reliable access to an alternative water treatment process. This unit will be separated into two sections and modified into a package that can be easily transported to all communities to address emergency water treatment needs. The second component of the project will provide supports to communities in meeting increasingly stringent potable water guidelines developed in southern Canada relying on advanced technologies that have limited or unattainable applications within Nunavut. Local capacity will be improved to optimize the water treatment plant operations to reflect unique water treatment challenges and to improve responsiveness to seasonal variables unique to arctic environments. |
