Environmental Governance and Biodiversity

ContextThe continuous growth of urban centres, industrialisation and the development of infrastructure are leading to severe environmental damage and threatening biological diversity in Algeria. Population increases, economic growth and climate change will further heighten the pressure on ecosystems and biodiversity in future. To counteract this trend, environmental governance and the associated implementation of existing and future environmental policies and plans must be significantly improved. The aim is to use the protection of biological diversity as an example to demonstrate how environmental governance can be enhanced.ObjectiveEnvironmental governance instruments and approaches have been introduced to achieve selected objectives for protecting the environment and biological diversity, such as the governance of protected areas using participatory approaches.ApproachThe programme will carry out a number of activities, including the following:• Taking ecological interests into account in the various policy fields as well as raising the population's awareness• Comprehensively strengthening the capability of the ministries involved and the downstream authorities to improve environmental governance• Improving knowledge about biological diversity and its functions among relevant actors from different areas of society, such as administration, business and civil society• Sustainably using and conserving biological resources for the benefit of the populationFurther information:Algerian Environment Ministrywww.mate.gov.dz
