Description
Description | Mauritania's coastal zone is one of the richest bodies of water in the world for fish. Its economic use makes an important contribution to Mauritania's national budget. However, fish stocks are threatened by overexploitation. The Mauritanian government is caught in a dilemma between the pressure to achieve short-term economic success and economic contributions and, on the other hand, to secure the natural resource base in this key sector in the long term. On the one hand, the excessive issuing of fishing licenses can lead to overexploitation of fish resources. On the other hand, compliance with fishing methods and zones should be consistently monitored as part of a modern management system. In order to make an effective contribution to the long-term preservation of Mauritania's fish resources in this area of tension, German development cooperation supports the fisheries policy in the interests of sustainable resource management through continuous sector dialogue; at the operational level, FC has been supporting Mauritanian partners for many years in monitoring fishing in the country's exclusive economic zone (the area beyond the coast up to an extension of 200 nautical miles). The aim of the FC project is to improve the ability of the fisheries monitoring authority to efficiently monitor and control coastal fish reproduction areas as well as fishing areas on the high seas by supplementing and optimising its technical equipment and training measures. |
