Description
Description | Due to the high population growth in Jordan and the expansion of wastewater treatment capacities, the amount of sewage sludge produced is constantly increasing. The few existing sewage sludge landfills and the storage areas at the sewage treatment plants are already overloaded, so that the sewage sludge remains in the treatment tanks or is improperly dumped in household waste landfills after partial drying. This leads to a burden on the environment and the climate. There is a risk of pollutants and germs seeping into the groundwater, greenhouse gas emissions and a limited operational capacity of the sewage treatment plants. In addition, considerable potential for reducing greenhouse gases, recovering energy and further developing established treatment processes remains unused. The aim of the FZ module is to make a contribution to climate-friendly disposal and recycling of sewage sludge and thus to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment. Measures for further stabilization, proper storage and recycling of sewage sludge are planned. The main measure is the construction of several decentralized sludge treatment plants and landfills. In addition, all sewage treatment plants in the country are to be equipped with mechanical dewatering systems to reduce the volume of transport. A pilot project will test the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer on pastureland. At one site, the construction of greenhouses will pave the way for future use in industry. Already in the planning phase of the infrastructure, it is to be ensured that all stakeholders are involved, especially disadvantaged groups. To this end, stakeholder engagement sessions will give women the opportunity to participate in the public participation process and to get involved in the planning of the investment. |
