Description

Description

The project Programa de Aguas y Cuencas de Tungurahua Phase 2 (PACT II) builds on the FC measure Environmentally compatible management of the Tungurahua watersheds PACT I (BMZ No. 2002 66015). It is aimed at further improving the living conditions of the rural population of the province of Tungurahua and the protection of its watersheds. This is to be achieved by improving water management and agricultural production (module objective). The plan is to modernize and mechanize existing small-scale irrigation systems on 2,347 hectares, which will benefit 4,256 families. The project consists of six modules Leito, Mocha Huachi, Alobamba, La Esperanza, Cola Canal Ambato-Huachi-Pelileo (AHP) and the canal extension AHP-MQP2. The planned investments are to be financed largely from an FC loan of EUR 19.0 million, which comes from RPL 2014 (EUR 12.0 million) and RPL 2018 (EUR 7.0 million). The sustainability of the investments is to be ensured by the introduction of automated hydrometeorological measuring stations as well as through training and advisory activities and the improvement of marketing structures. By increasing irrigation efficiency, the FC measure represents a significant contribution to combating water shortages in the province of Tungurahua and to adapting the country to climate change (KLA2 project). The options for increasing the province's water supply in other ways are very limited and increasing irrigation efficiency is therefore of paramount importance.
