Description
Description | The project is a response to a humanitarian emergency that occurred in Sierra Leone between May 2014 and October 2015 due to the rapid spread of the Ebola virus. Around 11,000 Ebola cases have been recorded in Sierra Leone, of which 3,400 have been fatal. However, health experts assume that the number is higher due to the stigma associated with Ebola. The goals of the first phase were to sustainably contain the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and to stabilize the health system. In addition to educating and sensitizing the population about behavior to contain the epidemic, access to hygiene products and clean water was improved. The resilience of the rural target population was promoted through an emergency cash-for-work program and by providing seeds. In addition, health facilities were supported in ensuring that the population was provided with basic care again. In the core area of epidemic control, the focus was on further promoting the integrated early warning system for epidemiologically significant diseases, including community-based structures. Furthermore, the spread of diseases in health facilities was to be contained by improving drinking water supplies and wastewater disposal. In the core area of health system strengthening, health facilities were supported in ensuring basic care for the population, with a focus on reproductive health/self-determined family planning. The planning and coordination function of the district management teams was also strengthened, particularly through training activities. Access to health services for women, who were particularly affected by the Ebola epidemic, was addressed through accompanying measures. |
