ERA is a non-profit foundation established in 1992 to serve the European public interest by ensuring that legal practitioners (lawyers in private practice, inhouse counsel, judges, prosecutors, court staff, national civil servants, national regulators, staff of the EU institutions and agencies, probation and enforcement officers) across the EU have the necessary knowledge and training to apply EU law. With its mandate and work, ERA’s overall ambition is to make European law work in practice and at all levels – European, national, regional and local. The pursuit of an aim of general European interest is therefore at the core of ERA’s nature, mission and objectives – and has been recognised as such for many years by the EU. ERA’s objectives contribute to the European Commission’s Priorities for 2019-2024 because, at the end of the day, “making the law work” is essential to the realisation of the EU’s policy objectives. As it stands in December 2021, the training programme for 2022 – which is only possible thanks to this operating grant – consists mainly of: 50 face-to-face training activities, 36 hybrid training activities (events taking place at the ERA premises in Trier combining face-to-face and remote participants) and 32 online-only training activities. It is complemented by the launch of some 50 new e-presentations, the development of four new basic e-learning courses, the publication of four issues of its quarterly legal journal ERA Forum. According to its work programme for 2022, over 57% of ERA’s training activities can be accessed by practitioners regardless of their location. This is in line with ERA’s efforts to make learning more attractive and more accessible to its target groups. Despite the resurgence of the pandemic in the last weeks of 2021, it is expected that 5,000+ participants from all EU member states and (potential) candidate countries will benefit directly from ERA’s activities and many more as indirect beneficiaries in the course of next year
