The Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) asks teachers and school leaders about working conditions and learning environments at their schools to help countries face diverse challenges. The TALIS study provides insights into teachers’ beliefs and attitudes about teaching and their pedagogical practices. It explores different themes in participating countries: professional development, school leadership, teaching practices, school climate, appraisal and feedback, job satisfaction and teacher profiles. It also assesses the degree to which teachers’ professional development needs are being met. The last cycle introduced new sets of questions on innovation in education, as well as on equity and diversity. Recognising the important role that school leadership plays in fostering an effective teaching and learning environment, TALIS also describes the role of school leaders and examines the support that they give to their teachers. Finally, TALIS examines the extent to which various factors are related to teachers’ feelings of job satisfaction and self-efficacy.
