Early 2006, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) awarded a 15-year BOT contract to Mass Jordan Trading Company for the construction, operation and maintenance of 500MW gas-fired power plant in Bir Daoud, 25 kilometers South of Arbil. Construction started in 2007 on a build-own-operate basis. . No information was disclosed on the bidding process. The project was financed by the Trade Bank of Iraq and represented an investment commitment of US$240 million. Originally, Mass Global’s Irbil project consisted of four 125MW Frame 9E simple-cycle gas turbines supplied by the US’ GE. Three additional units were subsequently added to the project and the current facility had a capacity of 875 MW and comprised series of simple-cycle gas turbines. In 2011, an extension of the project was to be implemented. The extension project was to increase the overall capacity of the plant to 1,312MW through the addition of eight new generation units, combined-cycle gas turbines. Bids were originally to be submitted by February 2011 but the deadline was extended upon requests from the bidders to March 2011. Alstom (France), Siemens (Germany), GE (US), Power Machines (Russia) and Wood Group (UK/US) were the major bidders.
