Description

Description

Statistics Poland is working towards the use of new sources of information that, on the one hand, provide high quality data and, on the other hand, are not costly and do not impose a heavy burden on information providers. In this respect, public statistics cooperates with the National Bank of Poland, which is provided with data on BOP travel compiled on the basis of statistical surveys. An important aspect of a coherent survey system in this area is payment card data. The increasing role of this source is due to the fact that more and more transactions are made in non-cash form. Additionally, the increased interest in the e-commerce industry on the part of consumers has led to an increasing number of online shops appearing in this market, offering a diverse range of products to consumers. New solutions are also being introduced to support online shopping, both technologically (e.g. payment processes are being improved with dedicated platforms) and logistically (related to the delivery of the order to the indicated address). Therefore, information on transactions obtained from payment cards is a valuable source of data for official statistics. On the basis of individual transactions, it is possible to obtain knowledge of the volume and direction of tourism-related expenditure, which complements knowledge of travel in the balance of payments. For this purpose, there is ongoing work to improve the quality of balance of payments data and to provide information on data sources for BOP travel and e-commerce as well as methods of aggregation (compilation) to improve their transparency.
