Eskom Carbon Capture Pilot Project at Kelvin Power Station

Eskom is piloting carbon capture technology at the Kelvin Power Station in Johannesburg to reduce emissions from its coal power plants. The project captures carbon dioxide from flue gas emissions for underground storage or conversion into industrial products like fertiliser salts, ammonia, and sulphuric acid. A separate World Bank funded study supports testing CO2 injection into deep geological formations. Eskom aims to use insights from these pilots to evaluate wider deployment across its coal fleet, targeting a 71 million metric tons annual emissions reduction by 2030.
