Economic/Social Impact of the Project Sterlite Industries plans to expand its copper smelting and refining capacity by 4 lakhs tonnes per annum with allied infrastructure. The facility will also have 2.5 lakh tonne per annum of Phosphoric Acid plant. The project will be set up in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. Sterlite is currently operating a 400,000 tonnes per annum Copper Smelter at Tuticorin and with this expansion, the total capacity would be 8 lakh tonnes per annum making it one of the largest single location copper smelter in the world. Land of approximately 320 acres has already been allotted by SIPCOT under 99 year lease.
