Description
Description | Although Ethiopia has made significant progress in increasing assess to improved water supply and sanitation services, it has the largest number of people without basic water supply or sanitation services in Eastern and Southern Africa region; as of 2020, more than 57.4 million people were without basic water access, and 104.6 million people without basic sanitation. Building upon a multi-sectoral, multi-donor WaSH platform that has been established through OneWaSH program, the proposed project will finance water supply, sanitation and water resource management infrastructure to expand access as well as further strengthen sector capacity to sustain services through improved water resource management, water quality and quantity monitoring, and supporting service providers. The project also aims to improve performance of water utilities in urban areas through incentivizing towards cost-recovery and credit worthiness. It will also help the government institutionalize and professionalize sector capacity building. The project ultimately addresses challenges in climate resilient, sustainable water supply, sanitation and water resource management services based on sectoral data, and helps the Government of Ethiopia make progress towards universal access. |
