Description
Description | Opportunity Opened in 1972, Etobicoke General Hospital is a community hospital under the William Osler Health System umbrella. In order to meet the growing demands of the community it serves and ensure patients receive the highest quality health care in modern, accessible facilities, the hospital site required significant revitalization and redevelopment. Results The new four-storey, 250,000 square-foot tower houses healthcare services most urgently needed by the Etobicoke community including: A state-of-the-art Emergency Department three times the size of the current space to support best practices in emergency care; A new fracture clinic; An Intensive Care Unit that is nearly four times larger than the current space; A maternal newborn unit with birthing suites and a specialized nursery for babies who are underweight, sick or premature; and An ambulatory procedures unit featuring operating rooms, pre- and post-op preparation and recovery areas and dedicated clinic spaces. Larger patient rooms in the new tower are filled with natural light and provide privacy and space to comfortably accommodate family members. The new maternal newborn unit supports more than 17,000 outpatient obstetrics/gynecology clinic visits annually and will include 12 bassinets, an increase of four bassinets; two care-by-parent rooms where new parents learn how to look after their newborns; and two infant resuscitation rooms. A new cardio-respiratory/electro-diagnostic unit brings together a number of services under one roof including a chest pain clinic. Units moved to new, expanded spaces with additional equipment include dialysis, diagnostic cardiology and the hospital’s laboratory. The new patient tower is designed and built to comply with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. “This is an exciting time – not only for William Osler Health System, but also for North Etobicoke and surrounding areas. Etobicoke General is in the throes of a transformational renovation and expansion to meet the needs of the growing community. With the completion of this state-of-the-art four-storey wing, we will ensure Etobicoke General Hospital keeps pace with new technologies, new diagnostic techniques and improvements in care – in addition to expanding access to the programs and services that are needed most by patients and families.” John Davies, Chair, William Osler Health System Board of Directors |
