Across the European Union countries there are more and more frequent nationalist movements undermining the obvious value of the European cooperation. Therefore, a need for strengthening it, as well as spreading knowledge about the EU has arisen as vital. As our school is located in the rural area of southern Poland with the students coming from relatively closed society, we have defined various objectives of the project we are to undertake. The project will target all the students of 3rd grade in 3 consequent years. It will provide them with: - factual knowledge about history, geography, institutions and organisation, as well as law behind the European Union, - deeper insight into European cultural heritage, - understanding of democracy and human rights, - skills of debating, public speaking and working under pressure, - awareness of benefits and drawbacks of belonging to the EU. The objectives are to be achieved by: - 30 English lessons per year covering the following topics: the European Union and its history, organisational structure and main bodies, cultural heritage of the EU, democracy, human rights and the acts of their violation, - 5 lessons of civic studies per year providing more detailed knowledge about the European law, - a visit to the former Nazi concentration camp supported by workshops on homicide, - Oxford debates organized during the lessons of English covering current controversial topics, - visits to last graders of local primary schools with the presentation about the EU, - celebrating special European Days, eg. the Day of Tolerance, Human Rights, - simulation games based on the work of European Parliament aimed at reaching agreement on a given problem, - performing elections to the students board according to full democratic procedures, - a visit to the EU institutions for the most outstanding and involved students during the year.
