Description

Description

Somalia’s path to economic development has received a significant boost with the successful revitalization of a crucial trade route between Galkacyo and Garowe in Puntland State. The road, a lifeline for the movement of goods, services, and people, had fallen into disrepair over the years, imperilling essential trade and economic progress. Thanks to a substantial €6 million funding grant from the European Union (EU), the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) joined forces with the Puntland Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing to breathe new life into the vital 54-kilometer connection. This transformative project, focusing on a trade route that links two major towns in Somalia’s Galmudug and Puntland States, has ushered in a new era of transport infrastructure for the region. At the heart of the endeavour was the rehabilitation of the Jalam to Harfo section of the road. Previously plagued by heavy traffic, cracks, and surface deterioration, this segment underwent a remarkable transformation. A journey that once consumed 2.5 hours can now be completed in a mere 40 minutes, a testament to the project’s resounding success. The tangible benefits of improved road conditions have reverberated throughout the region. The surge in commercial traffic has catalysed economic activities and trade, creating a ripple effect that is revitalizing local economies. Moreover, the rehabilitated road has bridged access to remote areas, unlocking fresh avenues for economic expansion and uplifting the overall quality of life for inhabitants.
