Description | Members of the European Parliament voted against a motion that would have blocked funding for major hydrogen pipeline projects included in the EU's second list of projects of common or mutual interest (PCI/PMI). The projects are set to receive subsidies from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy, which has an expanded budget for 2028-34. The list includes about 100 hydrogen-related projects, such as the Melita and EastMed pipelines, the BarMar subsea pipeline between Spain and France, and the 3,300km SoutH2 corridor linking North Africa to Europe. Civil society organizations had opposed the funding, arguing that the projects would increase dependence on fossil fuels due to insufficient renewable hydrogen production. |
