EU Law and Policy After Brexit

DCU proposes to create POSTBREX, a Jean Monnet Module to rigorously study EU Law & Policy after Brexit. POSTBREX will be a foundational full-year course, including 44h of in-class teaching, plus 8h of policy dialogues, for a total of 52h of teaching & learning per annum. This innovative interdisciplinary module will be divided in two parts: the first half will analyse the legal and institutional architecture of the EU with the aim of introducing students to the core structural features of the EU constitutional order. The second half will use the historical example of the UK‘s departure from the EU as a case study to enhance students' understanding of EU law & policy. POSTBREX will be a mandatory course within DCU’s flagship Masters of European Law and Policy (MELP)–an interdisciplinary program targeting students with a diverse background, including several civil servants. The module will be an instance of specialised teaching on EU developments that will complement DCU’s existing curriculum in EU studies. POSTBREX will be delivered entirely online, and employ open educational resources (OER), making all its resources publically available. POSTBREX will be taught by Prof Federico Fabbrini, who is a leading researcher in the field. He is the Founding Director of the DCU Brexit Institute, which is Ireland’s only and Europe’s first centre specifically created to analyse Brexit, and the editor of the 4-volumes book series “The Law & Politics of Brexit” published by Oxford University Press. Within the framework of the Brexit Institute, the module instructor will organize several dissemination, information and communication events on subjects relevant to POSTBREX which will feature EU, national, regional & local policymakers thereby involving students in these policy initiatives. POSTBREX will closely coordinate with other EU initiatives hosted at DCU, including the Jean Monnet Network BRIDGE and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence REBUILD, both directed by Prof Fabbrini.
