Description
Description | "Climate change, environment pollution pose a challenge to protecting and improving human health and well-being of the population in the WHO European Region. The extensive research evidence accumulated by the EU member states points to direct and indirect impact of climate change on human health and the environment. Mitigating the impacts of climate change and extreme hydro-meteorological events is one of urgent tasks in Europe and around the world. The EU’s leading role in environmental protection on the European continent is well-acknowledged. Over the past several decades the EU has taken sound actions to protect the environment and health of its population. The EU’s robust policies on protection of environment and human health have delivered concrete benefits over that period – a legislation which harmonizes environmental activities of the member states, creation and implementation of new approaches to improve the environment and public health It is believed that transfer and application of the advanced EU practices in this area could help partner countries comply with international standards of sustainable regional development, consolidate environmental security efforts and contribute to enhancing the quality of health and well-being of the population under climate change conditions. Namely, those practices could be applied in Russia to enhance domestic efforts in raising public awareness, promote education and research, reinforce preventative actions and improve environmental legislation and directives. The proposed Jean Monnet Chair ""EU policy responses and effective solutions for protecting the environment and human health from climate change"" is set to stimulate teaching, research and debate on European policy responses and approaches to protecting environment and human health from climate change in order to contribute to enhanced environmental security efforts, reinforced preventative actions, improved healthcare legislation and raised public awareness." |
