STRATEU (EU Strategic Autonomy) aims to develop teaching and research on the structure of the EU and select issues in international diplomacy, against the background of the fundamental concept of ‘strategic autonomy’. In particular, the project investigates the functioning of the Union and its external implications from a law and policy viewpoint, including (1) EU structure and functioning; and (2) EU international diplomacy, encompassing (a) strategic autonomy and economics; (b) strategic autonomy and security; and (c) strategic autonomy and fundamental rights. The Module will explore these questions by combining both a global and regional perspective. The Module will be based at the Centre for European Studies at the Australian National University (ANUCES), a top hub for EU expertise in Australia and the Pacific Region, involving teachers and researchers with proven expertise on the EU and international relations. While mostly centred on law and policy questions, the Module will also benefit from the knowledge of experts in the areas of economics and cultural studies. STRATEU aims to deliver cutting-edge research and on-campus and off-campus teaching, relying on the most-advanced pedagogical techniques. It will address practitioners and students at all levels based in Canberra and Australia and will be further open to registration worldwide. Notably, the Module will: 1. Equip participants with a critical understanding of the functioning of the EU and its strategic autonomy; 2. Prompt participants to use international relations, international law and comparative methods to understand EU international diplomacy; 3. Develop research on EU strategic autonomy from a comparative perspective; and 4. Establish, consolidate and extend a specialised network of experts on EU strategic autonomy, involving academics, policy-makers and stakeholders within and outside the EU and Australia.
