Description
Description | For over 10 years now, people in the Middle East have been suffering from the Syrian crisis. According to UNOCHA, over 11 million people need humanitarian aid. There are still 5.6 million Syrian refugees in the region and 6.2 million internally displaced people (as of September 2021). In addition, the humanitarian and economic crisis has worsened due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to this situation, the EU Trust Fund (EUTF) for the Syrian crisis Madad was set up in 2014 under the European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI) as the EU's first regional trust fund. The Directorate-General for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) is responsible for fund management. The EUTF aims to respond to the Syrian crisis and the massive refugee movements resulting from it with coherent, coordinated and increased cross-border aid measures. The EUTF's funding volume now amounts to EUR 2.38 billion (as of December 2021). Most of the funding comes from EU funds (around EUR 2.12 billion). Bilateral contributions from EU member states, Turkey and other donors amount to around EUR 235 million, with Germany being the largest bilateral donor with a total contribution of EUR 95 million (as of December 2021). |
