EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes - upgrade of the two main HU/UA road border crossing points

The project addresses studies and works at two road border crossing points (BCP) between Hungary (HU) and Ukraine (UA). The Beregsurány (HU)/Luzhanka (UA) BCP is located on Mediterranean core TEN-T corridor and the Záhony/ Chop BCP is located on the comprehensive TEN-T network. In particular, the project covers: - works for upgrading the Luzhanka (UA) BCP, with the reconstruction of the access road, the deployment of two weighbridges and the creation of additional inspection posts, - the preparation of a feasibility study for the overall development of the HU/UA road BCPs and - the improvement of Beregsurány (HU) BCP with the deployment of a weighbridge, including the relevant access road/ ramps, and a traffic information and control system. The overall objective of the project is to meet the required EU standards for EU external borders and EU Schengen borders and to increase the BCP throughput capacity for both passengers and freight road traffic between the EU and Ukraine. Both BCPs play an important role in humanitarian aid, economic development, and the development of EU-UA solidarity lanes. However, due to the existing limited capacity on the Ukrainian side at the Beregsurány (HU)/Luzhanka (UA) BCP, the traffic volume is rather low and traffic flows are mostly redirected through Záhony/Chop or even further through Romania. The project will optimise the traffic flows between the two HU/UA BCPs. In addition, it will increase road capacity, traffic safety and security, as well as the level of service. It will also enhance the inspection facility capacity and resilience to weather and climate change and ensure compliance with EU and Ukraine BCPs legal requirements in line with the final design outcomes.
