Description

Description

The major developments in recent years – such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, Russia’s very challenge to Europe’s security order, the rise of a competitive China as a systemic rival with different economic values or thriving populist forces on both sides of the Atlantic who are pushing back against immigration and openness – underscores the erosion of the liberal international order established after 1945. More than ever, the European Union and the United States need each other more than ever if they are to work toward rebuilding or re-imagining a new international order that will address the needs of their citizens, be more inclusive and therefore be seen as more legitimate in other parts of the world. This proposal would tackle the pivotal question of re-imagining the international order, paying attention to the close cooperation between the EU and the US, and by giving particular attention to four key policy areas, namely a) trade, investment, and economic security, b) technology, security, and defense, c) democracy and rule of law d) immigration, identity and borders. And it would do so with a fundamental commitment to inclusion, diversity, and access, which would permeate all of its work. The central activities of the proposal - be it the high-level speaker series, the student managed blog, the brown bag colloquium for cutting edge academic research, the policy workshop, the experiential learning competitions, the professional development initiatives, and the study abroad scholarships - will serve to engage with different and key stakeholders (students/civil society/media/policymakers), with the goal of facilitating a wide dissemination of the work of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence. And these activities will fundamentally serve the goals of the Erasmus + program, namely promoting EU studies, fostering dialogue, generating knowledge, and favoring wide outreach among a variety of target groups.
