EU-wide Strategic Gas Reserves

Dutch national gas operator Gasunie called for the creation of European Union-wide strategic gas reserves to prepare for long-term supply disruptions. The proposal includes research on the use of cushion gas in large gas storages as a reserve and suggests attractive tariffs for storage facilities at an EU level to increase storage utilization. The strategic reserves aim to supplement existing mandatory gas filling obligations, which require EU countries to fill domestic gas storage facilities by 1 November each year to cover winter demand but are insufficient for prolonged supply interruptions.
