Description

Description

The project EUinAction: Teaching the European Green Deal through role plays (EUTEG) promotes an understanding of the functioning of the EU, benefits and challenges of joint European rule-making in environmental and climate regulations. Thus, education can address unjustified critique and populist attempts to weaken the EU. Teaching about these issues can emphasise the meaning of democratic values, by offering critical and multi-perspective debates about which regulations should be implemented to mitigate climate change and adapt to its consequences. However, to achieve these objectives and to address EU environmental and climate regulations in school, teachers need knowledge about the complex European environmental law and climate policy as well as about teaching approaches to teach these issues in a meaningful and participatory way. We therefore develop a teacher training course that brings the European Green Deal into classrooms. We think that translating the knowledge about selected policy fields of the European Green Deal is best achieved by training teachers of all school subjects to implement role plays that mimic European negotiations in the context of environmental regulations. We will develop two role plays on the ecodesign and LULUCF regulations as these are excellent examples related to our daily lives and the objectives of the European Green Deal, thereby bringing in different policies, perspectives and interests in terms of tackling the climate crisis. In addition, we will develop teaching & learning materials for both teachers and school students in order to be able to implement the role plays. To reach all levels of teacher training, we will implement and evaluate the teacher training course at pre-service, trainee (in-job training) and in-service teacher levels.
