The Europe – China Jean Monnet Teaching Module (ECJMTM) provides an introductory course to Europe – China relations for postgraduate students at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI). This introductory course to Europe - China relations explores the evolving relationship between the European Union (EU) and China, focusing on historical, political, economic, and cultural dimensions. This course examines how China’s rise as a global power has transformed its interactions with Europe, and how both regions navigate complex issues such as trade, human rights, security, and global governance. Beginning with the historical context of early European engagement with China, the course will cover key events and shifts in the 20th and 21st centuries, including China’s economic reforms and its growing global influence. We will analyse the strategic interests of both the EU and China, exploring the tensions and opportunities arising from their economic interdependence, political differences, and geopolitical rivalries, particularly in relation to the United States. Key topics include the EU’s approach to trade and investment with China, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), human rights issues, security challenges, and the role of multilateral institutions. The course will critically assess how these factors shape EU-China relations and influence the broader global order. By the end of the course, students will have a nuanced understanding of Europe-China relations and will be able to critically analyse their implications for international politics and global governance.
