Description

Description

The European Payments Initiative (EPI) and the EuroPA Alliance signed an agreement to build a pan-European interoperable payment network covering 130 million users across 13 countries. The system, built around the digital wallet Wero, aims to enable Europeans to pay and transfer money across borders without using American networks like Visa or Mastercard. Wero, launched in July 2024, is based on SEPA instant credit transfers and allows users to send money using just a phone number. The network effect is strengthened by connecting existing national payment systems such as Italy's Bancomat, Spain's Bizum, Portugal's MB WAY, and the Nordics' Vipps MobilePay. Cross-border peer-to-peer payments are launching in 2026, with e-commerce and point-of-sale payments following in 2027.
