European Policy-Making in a Global Perspective

There is no denying that in recent years populism, anti-elitism, views associating Europe with unbridled liberalism and rogue capitalism have gone to the detriment of societal and student demand for ‘teaching Europe’. This chair and project are part of our effort to do something about just that. The aim of the chair is to disseminate knowledge on European Union policy-making and its significance for European citizens’ life and work. This dissemination process is aimed at 1) students of International Relations and European Studies; 2) students from other disciplines; 3) the public at large and more particularly those ‘teaching Europe’. As tools to realise these aims this project brings together five interrelated educational activities which are all European Union policy-making related. The first two encompass teaching the two courses 'European Policy-Making' (LYX074M10) and 'Capita European Politics in a Global Perspective' (LYX112M05) in the MA in International Relations programme of the University of Groningen. The project’s third component consists of a summer school teaching an overview of European politics to students from other disciplines than International Relations and/or European Studies. The fourth initiative comprises an international get-together or conference for academics teaching European Union studies with a view to exchanging best practices. The fifth and last activity is comprised of a public lecture series on the history, functioning and global role of the EU. These five subjects are fully in line with the academic expertise and didactic experience of the project’s intended chairholder. Dr. Harryvan has teaching and research experience of many years in the field of European integration and European politics. Dr. Harryvan has tenure and is an associate professor at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands.
