Description

Description

"The ""European Statistics Competition"" (ESC) has been established for several years as a creative and original form of educating young people and increasing statistical literacy among secondary school students. It is organised by Eurostat and NSIs since the school year 2017/2018. The Statistical Office of the SR will participate in the organisation of the ESC at national level in the school year 2022/23. The main objective of the competition is to encourage students' curiosity and interest in statistics, help them to learn how to read statistical data, to correctly navigate in the data and also to interpret them correctly. This way, students will gain the ability to distinguish between official and unofficial sources of data and by participating in the competition we will encourage them to increase their statistical literacy. The project will also teach young people to identify misinformation and hoaxes, as well as to verify and evaluate facts about them. The project also aims to encourage teachers to use new forms and methods of teaching statistics and real data provided by official statistics. The SOSR will carry out the individual steps of the competition according to the deadlines set in the national competition timetable, taking into account the national circumstances of the organisation of the competition as well as the constraints imposed by the ESC coordinator. In addition, the SOSR will work out national competition rules, a promotion strategy to reach the individual target audiences and a detailed communication plan for each stage of the national phase of the ESC. As the whole competition is online - from registration, to completing the tests, scoring them and to uploading the teams' analyses, it has the potential to reach a large number of schools, students and teachers. The SOSR will cooperate with the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, which will take over the patronage of the competition."
