The technological transformation that has changed the world in the past decade has resulted in an abundance of easily accessible new data sources. On a daily basis, we all encounter statistical information from advertisements, media, internet and even in general conversation. Given that statistics can be misinterpreted to strengthen an argument, statistical literacy is an important skill to have if one is to be capable of making sense of a complex world and taking informed decisions. A new set of skills are required from citizens, involving a critical appreciation of data provenance and quality, handling new data representations and understanding statistical concepts The European Statistics Competition (ESC) aims to stimulate the awareness of sound statistics in an age of fake news. It does so by promoting statistical literacy and curiosity among secondary school students, while encouraging teachers to use new educative materials based on official statistics. The participation of the National Statistics Office (NSO) in this competition is expected to promote statistical literacy and curiosity among secondary school students, while encouraging teachers to use new educative materials based on official statistics. The seventh edition of this competition is planned for scholastic year 2023-2024, commencing in September 2023.
