The project aims to improve statistical literacy among citizens, especially among students. The ESC is a competition organized by Eurostat and volunteering National Statistical Institutes. Organising the national phase of the competition will bring statistics closer to students in a form that is usable, approachable and interesting. This is especially important in a time when there is concern about the statistical literacy skills of young people, fake news and increased amount and sources of information. The competition engages young people as active users of statistics, preparing them for future work and being beneficial for their daily lives. Their skills in statistical literacy and usage will be improved. They will also become aware of the meaning of official statistics and how to find and interpret statistical data. The competition will also raise awareness about statistics in the wider society, and especially in the education sector, via social media and other forms of marketing. It can also improve the image of statistics, showing that learning about statistics does not have to be boring, and that it is relevant to understand real-world phenomena.
