Nowadays, more than ever, official information tends to be taken out of context and manipulated to construct false narratives. Fake news can quickly reach wide audiences and distort people’s perceptions of important topics. Official statistics are a staple in evidence-based policy-making, serving the government, the economy, and the public with reliable and relevant data about economic, social, demographic, and other important fields. The main goal of the project is to promote statistical literacy among secondary education students so they are equipped with the knowledge to navigate the complex world and are ready to bring more needed change in the future. Reaching this goal is only possible with the help of teachers, therefore, the project also aims to establish and maintain strong partnerships with schools. It is expected that by participating in this project, firstly, students and teachers will learn or deepen their knowledge of how to use the State Data Agency and Eurostat databases for the assignments. The anticipated long-term effect is creating an identifiable ESC brand and having a constantly growing number of students who not only take part in the Competition but also apply gained knowledge about national and European statistics in their everyday lives. An experienced team will work on the project to give the best guidance for students in search of reliable information and to encourage teachers to use official data and other statistical material in their classes. Most members of the team have already implemented other editions of the ESC in previous years and are competent to broaden its scope.
