Description

Description

The EU-TRACE project (EUropean Transformers ACcelerated Efficiency) focuses on maximizing the energy savings potential of the accelerated replacement of old, inefficient distribution and industrial transformers. In the EU, these transformers account for 38% of the 144 TWh/year electricity losses and represent 80% of the transformers population. Despite the introduction of stricter Ecodesign regulations (2015 and 2021), only about 25%-30% of potential energy savings have been realized through natural transformer replacement due to their long lifespan (often exceeding 40 years). EU-TRACE aims to generate an additional 2.1 TWh/year in electricity savings over the next 20 years by facilitating the accelerated replacement of these transformers through the development of new policies and tools for monitoring, evaluating, and projecting policy impacts across 7 EU Member States (Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium). The project addresses both regulated and non-regulated markets by developing tailored methodologies and policy support packages. For the regulated market, it leverages Article 27 of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) to ensure Distribution System Operators (DSOs) optimize networks and improve efficiency. For the private sector, the project encourages the adoption of more efficient transformers via incentives under Article 8 of the EED. Key objectives of EU-TRACE include: - Creating methodologies for streamlined data collection, monitoring, and reporting on policy implementation. - Developing a policy impact model to project energy savings and GHG reduction across different policy scenarios. - Promoting circularity in transformer manufacturing by emphasizing the use of recyclable, high-value materials. - Facilitating stakeholder engagement to ensure that the proposed policies are practical and effective, contributing to the EU's energy efficiency and climate goals.
