European Union Entry/Exit System (EES) Digital Border Control System

The European Union is implementing a new digital border control system called the Entry/Exit System (EES) to replace traditional passport stamps with digital registration and biometric data collection. The system records travellers' personal and biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints, to enhance border security and track short-term visitors across 29 European countries. The system has been gradually introduced since October 2025 and will be fully operational from April 10, 2026, at all external border points of participating countries. Initial rollouts have caused delays of up to three hours at Brussels Zaventem airport, resulting in missed flights.
