Description

Description

The main objective of the Jean Monnet Chair “European Union Law of the Sea” (SEALAW Chair) will be the promotion of teaching, research, information and dissemination of EU values on the law of the sea and its impact on Galicia. It aims to deal with the EU’s role as a maritime actor in a globalised world, enhancing awareness of the EU and facilitating people-to-people dialogue. It will be the only one Chair on law of the sea in Spain. Spain's maritime coastline is the second largest of the EU Member States and Galicia, is a peripheral region of the EU that is highly dependent on the sea and fishing. Thus, this Chair will act as a reference point for the promotion of innovative courses on EU law of the sea for Bachelor and Master's students of EU studies or who do not automatically come into contact with EU studies. Furthermore, specialized training courses (for secondary school students and PhD students; e-course and summer course), international conferences, webinars, keynote speeches via Streaming, and study visits to Galician maritime institutions will be organized for members of civil society that will promote active European citizenship. The number of people, benefiting from this Chair, is extremely large and diverse: authorities and public administration competent in matters related to the sea, private entities with interests in the field of fishing and navigation (foundations, ship-owners associations), lawyers, professionals in the sector, students (Bachelor, Master, PhD) and society in general. The expected results are to give EU law of the sea greater visibility, raising its profile in society as a whole and expand the channels of information, training and dissemination of specific issues related to the EU's activities at sea. These positive effects will also be visible after the SEALAW Chair will be finished. The outputs will be the development of teaching materials, books, a website, videos, a YouTube channel, and annual reports.
