European Union Learning Activities and Resources for Teacher Trainers and Teachers

The application addresses the need for a place occupied by European Union Learning (EU Learning) in teacher training programmes and in primary and secondary education curricula in the Flemish Community of Belgium. The objective is to promote innovation at the level of teacher training programmes, schools, educational networks and pedagogical services through the introduction of EU Learning in existing educational programmes and to raise awarenss among teachers and students of the impact of the European Union and its economic, social and political integration efforts on everybody’s life. The aim of the project is the development of resources on EU Learning in Dutch to be used in teacher training programmes and in primary and secondary schools, educational networks and pedagogical services and of suitable training activities. Three series of 15 online video tutorials with supplemented readings, learning outcomes and test questions, lesson plans are prepared at VUB for the 3 target groups: teacher training programmes (adults), primary education classrooms (age 7-12 ), and secondary education classrooms (age 12-18). The flexibility of the modular courses is appropriate for classroom use to explore EU Learning at the different levels. The training activities take place at the 4 campuses of teacher training of VUB (annually about 120 students), at in-service trainings at schools (annually between 5-20 schools are selected for in-service training depending on the duration of the in-service training), through in-service trainings by the educational networks and pedagogical services, and through making the online open learning tutorials and online textbooks in Dutch available on the open learning platform to the above- mentioned target groups and teachers interested to implement EU Learning in everyday teaching practices. The resources on EU Learning will also be discussed at the final international conference with teacher educators from other European countries.
